From 03e2d7890acc90c00ff313c5e2c7e42256c4012f Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Andy Dixon Date: Tue, 15 Sep 2026 21:04:07 +0100 Subject: [PATCH] feat(cognition): wanting, intending and acting inside the cognitive cycle MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Volition and planning now run as part of cognition (PLAN §8.2 item 3): - A volition hook derives wants after each cycle from what it perceived and produced, satisfies answer wants when a reply is sent, raises due, overdue, expired and conflicting commitments, and expires faded wants. Events produced by earlier cycles are not re-derived. - An intend process proposes deciding about the strongest undecided wants; the candidate competes for the workspace, so attention gates what the mind decides to pursue. The handler makes value tensions explicit (caution against disruptive writes, privacy against reading personal data), resolves them with recorded scores, runs deterministic formation with commitments, policy preview, goals and values, records the decision whatever it is, and plans a formed intention in the same transaction. Operator requests carry their own weight in formation. - Explicit requests in conversation ("restart ", "logs for ", "fetch ") become wants with proposed means instead of direct invocations; the reply says the request was recorded and that acting depends on commitments and policy. - The executor is woken after commits, runs in a scheduler-owned loop and reacts to the event bus: a new commitment tightens or abandons affected intentions (withdrawing their pending approvals), a weakened assumption or a finished goal triggers reconsideration. A tightened plan may reuse its strategy; a failed one may not. - Metacognition gains volition checks: strong wants repeatedly set aside, intentions with no recorded reason, intentions a commitment forbids, commitments that cannot be kept, churn, repeated failed execution, cost outweighing value, and intentions that outlived their goal. - A plan model role and prompt let a model propose decompositions that the planner validates. Ablations are a fork-only configuration field. - Approvals required by an intention are described as coming from a commitment or value constraint. The expectation after an approved action is linked to the execution event, not the request. - The wants.values column of the unreleased migration 0026 is renamed value_keys: VALUES is reserved and the generic snapshot restore does not quote identifiers. - The hostile-output security test now uses a message that asks for no action, because an operator's "status of " is legitimately a read-only status check. --- cmd/noemad/main.go | 16 +- internal/app/app.go | 5 + internal/brain/cycle.go | 10 +- internal/brain/process.go | 7 + internal/capabilities/capabilities.go | 3 +- internal/capabilities/service.go | 2 +- internal/cognition/action.go | 72 +--- internal/cognition/goals.go | 4 +- internal/cognition/handlers.go | 3 +- internal/cognition/metacognition.go | 108 +++++- internal/cognition/registry.go | 3 +- internal/cognition/respond.go | 9 + internal/cognition/volition.go | 433 ++++++++++++++++++++++++ internal/llm/llm.go | 2 + internal/llm/prompts/defaults/plan.tmpl | 15 + internal/minds/config.go | 14 + internal/planning/executor.go | 22 +- internal/planning/executor_test.go | 2 +- internal/planning/planner.go | 4 +- internal/planning/react.go | 123 +++++++ internal/planning/wiring.go | 98 ++++++ internal/volition/rules.go | 11 +- internal/volition/store.go | 4 +- migrations/0026_volition.up.sql | 2 +- tests/agency/helpers_test.go | 73 ++++ tests/agency/volition_test.go | 132 ++++++++ tests/harness/harness.go | 13 +- tests/security/authority_test.go | 2 +- 28 files changed, 1111 insertions(+), 81 deletions(-) create mode 100644 internal/cognition/volition.go create mode 100644 internal/llm/prompts/defaults/plan.tmpl create mode 100644 internal/planning/react.go create mode 100644 internal/planning/wiring.go create mode 100644 tests/agency/helpers_test.go create mode 100644 tests/agency/volition_test.go diff --git a/cmd/noemad/main.go b/cmd/noemad/main.go index 950717b..6036a5f 100644 --- a/cmd/noemad/main.go +++ b/cmd/noemad/main.go @@ -44,6 +44,7 @@ import ( "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/narrative" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/notifications" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/observability" + "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/planning" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/predictions" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/privacy" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/reflection" @@ -54,6 +55,7 @@ import ( "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/storage" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/ui" "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/version" + "github.com/andydixon/noema/internal/volition" "github.com/andydixon/noema/migrations" "github.com/andydixon/noema/pkg/events" "github.com/andydixon/noema/pkg/ids" @@ -183,11 +185,16 @@ func run() error { deps.Consolidation = &consolidation.Service{DB: db, Memory: deps.Memory, Beliefs: deps.Beliefs, Events: deps.Events, LLM: deps.LLM, Prompts: deps.Prompts, Minds: deps.Minds, Log: log} deps.Dreaming = &dreaming.Service{DB: db, Memory: deps.Memory, Beliefs: deps.Beliefs, Events: deps.Events, LLM: deps.LLM, Prompts: deps.Prompts, Log: log} deps.Reflection = &reflection.Service{DB: db, Events: deps.Events, Beliefs: deps.Beliefs, Goals: deps.Goals, Memory: deps.Memory, Predictions: deps.Predictions, LLM: deps.LLM, Prompts: deps.Prompts, Log: log} + deps.Volition = volition.NewStore(db) + deps.Plans = planning.NewStore(db) + deps.Executor = &planning.Executor{Plans: deps.Plans, Volition: deps.Volition, Caps: deps.Capabilities, Predictions: deps.Predictions, Resolver: deps.Resolver, Events: deps.Events, Minds: deps.Minds, Memory: deps.Memory, Log: log, + Planner: &planning.Planner{Registry: capReg, Effect: planning.PolicyEffect(deps.Capabilities), Model: planning.ModelPlanner(deps.LLM, deps.Prompts)}} registry := cognition.NewRegistry(cognition.Stores{Memory: deps.Memory, Beliefs: deps.Beliefs, Conversations: deps.Conversations, Graph: deps.Graph, Assertions: deps.Assertions, Motivation: deps.Motivation, Narrative: deps.Narrative, Notifications: deps.Notifications}) brainCfg := brain.Config{DB: db, Events: deps.Events, Minds: deps.Minds, Registry: registry, Pool: scheduler.NewPool(cfg.MaxWorkers), Log: log, Metrics: metrics, Services: brain.Services{Events: deps.Events, Memory: deps.Memory, Beliefs: deps.Beliefs, LLM: deps.LLM, Prompts: deps.Prompts, -
